At BPAFreeKids.com, we receive many questions comparing our non-toxic products with the unsafe ones found on many store shelves. We thought we’d share one of these inquiries and our response with you. We hope it is as helpful to our readers here as it was to this customer.

Their question:

I am interested in purchasing two Foogo straw cups. My children are 1 and 2 years old and are use to drinking from Playtex straw sippy cups. Are these cups similar in size and grip? Also, do the personalized vinyl labels stick to these cups?

Our response:

Hello,

I did some research on the Playtex straw bottles you mentioned and there are some important differences between that and our Foogo straw bottles.

The biggest, of course, is that Foogo’s are toxin free. Another is the difference in size. Playtex are 9 ounces while Foogo straw bottles are 12, (sippy cups are 7). Foogo also incorporates the TherMax double wall vacuum insulation to keep drinks cold and safe from bacteria for 12 hours (sippy cups 6). Please follow this link to read the Cornell University study on the Foogo sippy cup. No other child drinking container does that!

Another distinctive difference are the lids. It looks like with the Playtex top, you push up and back to expose the straw. With the Foogo bottles, all your child need do is push the button on the front and the top pops open to reveal the straw. I couldn’t find any information about Playtex’s top or bottom straw, but I can tell you that both the soft silicone top straw and the inside hard straw of our Foogo straw bottles are free of BPA and other toxins that are too often found in other straw bottles.

The only difference in grip is the way it feels; plastic of Playtex to the stainless steel of a Foogo. The personalized labels do stay on.

We’ve had a lot of parent inquiries of what to do with their collections of toxic bottles and sippy cups now that they’ve made the decision to switch to BPA Free. We thank these parents for not only choosing a safer alternative, but also making the right choice for our planet. We’ve provide a list of which plastics can be recycled and how to go about it.

There are indeed many different kinds of plastics, but not all can be recycled and with the ones that can, it’s important to categorize them together. If not, the recycled plastic won’t melt properly and will make it difficult to be reused for consumers again.

Some of us are fortunate to have curbside pickup, others are taking that extra, appreciated step of bringing their loads to their local recycling location. The first step in learning what plastics can be recycled in your specific area, please call your local recycling center, or if unknown, your local town or city offices can help.

The American Plastics Council developed a standard code to help sort plastics for the recycling process. This code is identified by three arrows that point in a clockwise direction and create a triangle, generally located on the bottom of the plastic container in question. Each triangle has a number in the center that identifies that plastic’s type and below this is a combination of letters that correspond to the number located inside that triangle.

Listed below are the seven different types of plastics, as stated at The American Plastics Council website:

1. PET or PETE (Polyethylene terephthalate). This is one of the most frequently recycled plastics by consumers. Containers marked with a “1″ include some soft drink bottles, water bottles, plastic peanut butter jars, plastic wrap, and salad dressing bottles.

2. HDPE (High-density polyethylene). This type of recyclable plastic, marked with a “2,” is also frequently recycled by consumers. Plastics included in this category include some plastic milk cartons, juice bottles, shampoo bottles, and liquid detergent containers.

3. PVC (Polyvinyl chloride). This type of recyclable plastic, marked by a “3,” is less commonly accepted at local recycling centers. It includes some clear food packages, liquid detergent containers, and many construction applications including some traffic cones.

4. LDPE (Low density polyethylene). Marked with a “4,” this type of recyclable plastic is used in some bread and frozen food bags, trash cans, and garbage can liners.

5. PP (Polypropylene). Another plastic commonly used in the automobile and construction industries, plastics marked with a “5″ that are also recyclable include some car battery casings, oil funnels, and plastic drinking straws.

6. PS (Polystyrene). Also an uncommon consumer type of recyclable plastic, this type of plastic, marked by a “6″ includes some packing foam, plastic cutlery, protective packaging for electronic goods and toys.

7. Other. Some types of plastic marked as “other” or with a “7″ can not be recycled as they commonly are made with a combination of the previous six types of plastic, or with a type of plastic other than the six listed above. Containers marked with a “7″ that are recyclable plastic include some 3 to 5 gallon reusable water bottles.

I hope you found this helpful and, once again, the best way to find out which of the seven types of plastics you can start recycling in your area is to call your local recycling center or municipal offices.

USA Today is reporting that the FDA’s advisory board, a group of outside experts, has voted unanimously that the agency ignored crucial evidence that BPA could indeed harm children.

It is mostly our children that are exposed to BPA in the form of their plastic baby bottles and sippy cups, but adults aren’t in the clear. Many of us drink water from a bottle and the insides of many of our canned goods are lined with BPA. Tests have shown 93% of Americans have this chemical in their bodies.

The FDA’s August decision saying BPA is safe was determined from studies done only by the chemical industry. Other studies that weren’t even considered suggest quite the opposite, that BPA acts like the hormone estrogen, posing harm to children at levels at least ten times than what the FDA allows.

The mistakes made by the FDA are upsetting as they, the agency that oversees the safety of our food containers, underestimted BPA’s potential dangers to us, told us not to worry. But here is why we should:

*When measuring the amount of BPA to which babies are exposed from liquid infant formula, for example, the FDA used data from more than a decade ago and sampled only 14 liquid formula cans, all from the Washington, D.C. area. It also based its exposure estimate on the average BPA level. That could allow children fed from cans with above-average BPA levels to receive far more of the chemical.

*The FDA also failed to consider the cumulative effect of being exposed to BPA from dozens of products, from sippy cups to medical devices. That fundamental error “severely limits the usefulness” of the agency’s safety estimate.

*At the advisory group’s September meeting, experts testified that children with certain health problems are given only liquid formula, as are children in the federal government’s Women, Infants and Children program for the poor.

*The FDA didn’t consider that many parents heat baby bottles in the microwave and sterilize them with boiling water, which could cause the bottles to release far more BPA.

*The FDA report doesn’t include recent studies, such as a “landmark” September report from the Journal of the American Medical Association linking BPA, for the first time, with diabetes and heart disease, says Martin Philbert, a University of Michigan professor who led the science board’s BPA subcommittee. Another study published this month suggests BPA could make breast cancer patients less likely to benefit from chemotherapy.

*The industry-funded studies used by the FDA weren’t designed to study newborns, whose bodies may process BPA very differently than adults, Philbert says. At the meeting, other science board members noted that the FDA draft doesn’t consider others who might be especially vulnerable to BPA, such as pregnant women and breast cancer patients being treated with estrogen-suppressing drugs.

The Environmental Working Group says BPA could cause brain, behavior and prostate damage at levels 500 times lower than the FDA’s exposure limit.

Sonya Lunde, a scientist with the EWG, said in an interview, “You cannot tell parents with a straight face that BPA is safe. As a parent, it’s outrageous to think that another generation is going to be born and subjected to these toxic exposures while this process works itself out.”

NuturePure has done it again! We turned to this established company for a pacifier and they not only gave us what we wanted, but made it a teether as well!

Designed for babies three months and older, this pacifier and teether combination is made completely of soft and nautral food-grade silcone, with no plastic parts or materials of any kind. It’s designed with an orthodontic bulb to provide comfort and promote healthy teeth alignment. Made with air vents, it allows for proper circulation to prevent skin irritation and with a soft, flexible shield it provides comfort during sucking. The innovatively designed grooved handle can be used as a safe, natural teether to soothe your child. We wouldn’t have it in our store if it weren’t BPA free, but this pacifier has no allergens either.

NurturePure has a new bottle with removable handles and three interchangeable tops!

The GrowPure feeding system is uniquely designed to be lightweight and compact, yet amazingly holds up to 8 ounces of your child’s favorite drink. It is specially made with a safe polymer material recommended by experts to be free of harmful chemicals such as bisphenol A, phthalates, polycarbonte and PVC’s. The nipple, spout and straw are made from food-grade silicone.

Numerous scientific studies have found that many plasitc baby bottles leach toxic chemiclas that may have harmful effects to children’s health. The most popular baby bottle brands all were found to leach harmful toxins at unhealhty levels. Because certain plastics can degrade over time, exposure to the released chemicals can be detrimental to child development and may lead to disease.

Let us help you train your child in 3 growing stages:

It’s that time again! We are proud to announce our sponsorship of the Eighth semi-annual Great Cloth Diaper Hunt!

Last year I came across a link to the Great Cloth Diaper Hunt while chatting with other moms about cloth diapers. I love scavenger hunts and found myself addicted after I discoverd that first little diaper icon. I have participated in the GCDH two times now and each time my eyes are opened to the wonderful world of work at home moms and natural family living. Not only is the hunt fun with rhymes, riddles and trivia questions (which can easily be Googled if you’re stumped!) but you can bookmark stores that have caught your eye to return to later. Most sponsors have discounts only for participating hunters, many of which run through December and holiday shopping!

How does it work? It’s very simple! Registration began October 15th. Once you register here, you start visiting all the participating sponsor sites and hunt for the Diaper Decisions diaper to earn entries into 65 random prize drawings, including two Grand Prizes and one Ultimate Grand Prize! The hunt starts Saturday, November 1st at 11:00 AM EST!

If you’d like even more details you can visit the Rules and FAQ page at Diaper Decisions.

A little history:

It all began when I complained to my husband one day about the teeth marks scratched into my middle son’s Gerber sippy cup. He made a comment about what our son might have consumed via those marks. I started looking into what sippy cups were made of. I was shocked and suprised and shared what I found with my husband. We then started searching online for stores that had safer alternatives for our boys and didn’t find many at all. We had always considered starting a business that might benefit our children, especially our 10 year old son who was diagnosed with autism back in 2001. And here we are now.

We stock items that are proven to be free of bisphenol A, phthalates and PVC. We continue to add more products for our children that we, as parents, can feel comfortable giving them because we know these items are in their mouths as often, or even more, than their own fingers!

We carry bottles by Adiri, NuturePure and Green to Grow.
Sippy cups and straw bottles by Thermos which use their awesome technology for keeping things cold and safe from bacteria contamination!
Pacifiers and teethers from EcoBaby.
A vibrating massaging teether that does double duty as a steering wheel!
Sohpie the Giraffe is not only all natural but has been around since the 60′s!
And Boon’s feeding gear is at the front of the pack with their non toxic and modern designs!

We are offering a 10% discount for all GCDH hunters that will last through December. If your order total is $65 or higher, shipping inside the continental USA is free!

Happy hunting!

On Friday, the FDA’s Science Board will meet to discuss the controversy in public. It was a subcommittee of the Science Board that issued the report criticizing FDA’s safety analysis. But FDA officials say it could take two to five years to complete additional research and reach a final conclusion.

Two to five yeas?? Ok. Fine. If it’s going to take that long to determine if BPA is hazardous to our health, then ban BPA until the FDA figures it out. This way we can stop the mixed messages we’re hearing and avoid a very likely hazardous chemical in our babies’ bottles. By banning BPA, it just might push the FDA to get to work and stop dragging their feet and reach a conclusion before this two to five year prediction. After it’s all said and done we’ll either feel better that we stopped allowing our growing and susceptible babies and children to have contact with this chemical, or, we’ll know that we protected our children from a possible hazard until it was proven, beyond any doubt, that it is in fact safe. Not only will we feel more confident about the baby products on the market, but we’ll feel better about the agency who’s job it is to help us protect our children.

Personally, I don’t think that day will ever see the sun. Safer plastic alternatives are readily available, contrary to what some articles want you to believe. We have a growing selection here at BPA Free Kids.com. If you order before 1:00 PM EST on weekdays or by 11:00 AM on Saturdays, you’re BPA Free products will be shipped to you the same day, arriving for your children to use, toxin free. All orders over $65.00 will receive free Parcel Post shipping within the continental United States.

Our FDA, an agency that is responsible for the safety regulation of products to protect and promote our health, is saying BPA is safe, however, reduce your exposure.

The recent National Toxicology Program’s Reportis saying there is concern. Stores all around are removing items made with BPA from their shelves voluntarily. Canada banned it. Why is the FDA dragging their feet? The upsetting effects of BPA have been known since the accidental damage of a lab’s plastic mouse cage resulted in the finding that this common chemical has powerful disruptive effects on the reproduction capabilities in mice. This was back in April of 2003. All the FDA is saying, after over five years of knowledge is…

Right now, our tentative conclusion is that it’s safe, so we’re not recommending any change in habits, but there are a number of things people can do to lower their exposure – Laura Tarantino, head of the FDA’s office of food additive safety.

Instead of encouraging and working with companies that currently use BPA in their manufacturing to make a switch, their telling families to avoid warming their food in any plastic container with the number ’7′ on the bottom as heat helps to release the chemical.

It’s being said this debate can go on for years, but our children don’t have that long. They are drinking out of bottles, sippy cups, water bottles and eating their hot food with necessary products made with an unnecessary and proving to be hazardous chemical NOW. Even if just one study showing a link between BPA and possible health problems was published, it is our responsibility and through us the FDA’s, to stop production and pull all products from consumers reach until a thorough investigation is done. Instead, the FDA isn’t seeing the seriousness as one study after the other shows consequences of this chemicals use in even small amounts.

We shouldn’t wait until further studies are done in order to act in protecting humans - Dr. Ana Soto of Tufts University, recommending government action today to limit BPA use.

A copy of the original study opening our eyes to BPA can be purchased at Science Magazine or PubMed.gov.
